Each year, our TRREB Members donate $1 per member per month in support of shelter-based charities.

We heard from the most vulnerable about the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted. Accordingly, TRREB donated an additional $278,000 in ORCF emergency grants to GTA food banks and shelter-based charities. This supplemented the $713,000 that TRREB already donated in 2019, increasing TRREB’s total charitable support in the last 12 months to almost $1 million dollars!

TRREB Members Participate in Feed Tomorrow http://history.trrebwire.ca/trreb-members-participate-in-feed-tomorrow/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/trreb-members-participate-in-feed-tomorrow/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 21:04:06 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=465 TRREB Members have continuously given back to the communities they live and work in.

Over 100 TRREB Members volunteer hours of their own time at 16 schools across the GTA by cooking and serving food on behalf of Toronto Foundation for Student Success Feeding Our Future:

Children’s Breakfast Program.

Well over 32,000 REALTOR® volunteer hours are accumulated every school year, and the quality of the programs would not be possible without the generous contribution from TRREB Members.

TRREB’s Build Days http://history.trrebwire.ca/trrebs-build-days/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/trrebs-build-days/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 21:03:05 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=461 What better way for Toronto REALTORS® to support the importance of affordable housing than joining the frontlines to help build a home? Since 1999, TRREB Members have donned hard hats and grabbed their hammers to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, an international organization that helps low-income families move into home ownership. Among many landmark projects, TRREB is one of the partners that supported Pinery Trail, Habitat for Humanity’s largest home build project ever in the Greater Toronto Area, and a project that has provided 50 Habitat families with a place to call home.

TRREB at Pride Parade http://history.trrebwire.ca/trreb-at-pride-parade/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/trreb-at-pride-parade/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 21:02:11 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=457 In 2010, when TRREB President Tom Lebour suggested that Toronto REALTORS® should join Toronto’s annual Gay Pride Parade, he was hoping for a modest banner. Instead, Members responded with a spirited show of support. TRREB built a large float to share the message “There’s no place like home” and 200 marchers helped distribute a souvenir bracelet “TREB celebrates diversity” to the crowds lining the parade route. The success of the Gay Pride Parade is part of the reason that Toronto has become known as a city that embraces diversity. When pride celebrations began in 1981, they drew a crowd of approximately 1,500 people. In 2014, Toronto was chosen as the WorldPride site. Today, attendance surpasses one million people.

Past President’s Scholarship Awards http://history.trrebwire.ca/past-presidents-scholarship-awards/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/past-presidents-scholarship-awards/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 21:01:00 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=448 One generation reaches out to the next. In 2007, TRREB created the Past President’s Scholarship Award to support young people continuing their studies at a university, college or trade school. Two $5,000 first place scholarships and two $2,500 second place scholarships are awarded each year. As part of the 2020 application, students were asked to write an essay related to housing. One topic asked students to explore the question of what the future of housing might look like and why. The second topic asked students to look at factors, such as transportation, buyer incentives and vacancy taxes, that address affordability issues across the Greater Toronto Area.

A staple in Toronto’s downtown core is Chinatown. Although this is a photo of Chinatown from the past, an array of shops, amenities and restaurants continue to remain key features of this neighbourhood.

Real Estate Boards Advance Humane Views http://history.trrebwire.ca/real-estate-boards-advance-humane-views/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/real-estate-boards-advance-humane-views/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 20:58:22 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=440 Past President Joseph Abela said it fifty years ago and it still rings true today: “REALTORS® do not need to apologize for their community involvement beliefs. A real estate board’s community interests go far beyond the buying and selling of property. The whole spectrum of economic, social and political development within the community invites our concern because the best possible place for anyone to own real estate is in a community that is healthy in every way.”

New MLS® Code First in Canada http://history.trrebwire.ca/new-mls-code-first-in-canada/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/new-mls-code-first-in-canada/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 20:57:21 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=436 Small things matter, even the addition of a short code to MLS® Listings. In 1978, TRREB became the first real estate board in Canada to cooperate with the Canadian Rehabilitation Council for the Disabled (now Easter Seals Canada) to establish an accessibility code for its residential listings. The code was forward-looking, offering a broader definition of mobility issues than were generally used at the time.

TRREB’s Annual Golf Charity Classic http://history.trrebwire.ca/trrebs-annual-golf-charity-classic/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/trrebs-annual-golf-charity-classic/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 20:56:19 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=432 For many years, TRREB’s annual Golf Charity Classic provided a chance for TRREB Members to enjoy a day on the golf course, demonstrate their golfing skills and vie for the grand prize. A banquet and award presentation topped off the day of fun. The tournament also had a serious intent – proceeds were donated to the Salvation Army and other charitable organizations to help fund programs that supported vulnerable people in the Greater Toronto Area. Supporting a wide range of charities has always been a big part of TRREB’s commitment to building better communities and a great way for REALTORS® to engage with the communities they serve.

REALTOR® Food Drive http://history.trrebwire.ca/realtor-food-drive/ http://history.trrebwire.ca/realtor-food-drive/#respond Wed, 18 Nov 2020 20:55:30 +0000 http://history.trrebwire.ca/?p=423 Over the years, the REALTOR® Food Drive has helped to feed vulnerable people in Greater Toronto Area communities. Because REALTORS® get to know and understand their communities so well, they recognize that food banks are vital to ensure that everyone can access the food they need and to provide a link for people to access critical community services. During times of emergency, like the COVID-19 outbreak, these services face even greater demands and need even more organizational support. Through holiday food and toy drives and the TRREB/ThinkFood partnership, REALTORS® have not only donated food to local food banks but also contributed to the recycling of empty ink jet cartridges.
